My art begins with noticing, and then looking again. I’m interested in what changes when a familiar subject is simplified, rearranged, repeated, carved, colored, or seen from another angle. I work across materials, styles, and forms,
following the idea wherever it happens to lead.
Many Ways of Seeing
Many Ways of Seeing begins with a single subject and asks how many different things
it might become when looked at another way.
Each piece is created by hand using pen and ink, watercolor, and pencil,
and returns to the same starting point through changes
in perspective, abstraction, color, context, and scale.
The subject stays. The seeing changes.
Linocuts
In a linocut, the image is carved into a block, inked, and printed by hand.
Once a line is carved away, it cannot be put back.
I like that constraint, and the way each hand-pulled print carries small variations of its own.
The image may begin with the same block, but no two impressions are quite the same.
Zentangle®-Inspired Art
Inspired by the Zentangle® Method of pattern drawing, this work is another way of seeing.
Instead of beginning with a subject or idea, it often begins with random patterns
and develops into meaningful abstract expressions.
This process is freeing in that I can just let the work become whatever it's going to be.
